A little more behind our change of venue

To follow up on our recent announcement, hopefully answering some common questions:

First and foremost, the event will still be free!

As for some of the other factors in this decision: expansion in the borough has been a challenge. Before the 2024 festival, we had plans to grow, but unfortunately, those were not approved.

Next, funding has been tricky, and it comes in three parts:

1. The stage in the park isn’t really suitable for Roots & Rhythm. We let Parks & Rec know, and while it was purchased anyway, it wasn’t the right fit for what we need. If the stage had been suitable, it might have helped offset some of the funding challenges.

2. Government grants—over half of our funding comes from grants, and two major ones were cut or removed entirely.

3. Local donations—while we are grateful for longtime supporters, local businesses, and our banks who donate each year, the overall contributions just haven’t been enough to make up for the lost grants.

The festival costs roughly $70k to put on each year. To keep it going as a free, community-focused event, we needed a way to expand—more vendors, more visitors, more opportunities for support.

That’s where the move to the Fairgrounds comes in. The space allows us to grow: more vendors, more people, more music, and more room to enjoy it all. Plus, the stage fits our needs, electricity is already in place, and we can avoid expensive generator rentals.

We hope this sheds more light on this decision, we did not make it lightly, and we plan on keeping the music playing!

Update on our new location

For 18 wonderful years, Roots & Rhythm has grown, thrived, and celebrated music right here in the Town of Honesdale—why, we’re officially old enough to vote! What started as a simple idea in Honesdale’s Central Park has blossomed into a free, sustainable concert that brings together our NEPA neighbors and travelers from near and far. We are endlessly grateful for the community that gathers, year after year, to support this mission.

As many of you know, changing policies have made it harder for nonprofits like Honesdale Roots & Rhythm to receive critical government grant funding that aids us in succeeding in our mission to bring this as a free event to the public that brings community and sustainability together. While this shift brings challenges, it does not mark an end—only a new direction.

We’re excited to share that Roots & Rhythm is planting fresh roots at a beloved local landmark: the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. For the very first time, this historic space will come alive with the energy and groove of Roots & Rhythms on June 20th, 2026.

Moving from Central Park to the Fairgrounds allows us to grow in ways that honor the quality and experience our community deserves. We hope our local friends, families, and businesses will continue to stand with us as we build something truly special for everyone who lives in, visits, and loves Honesdale.

Thank you for growing with us, supporting us, and helping us continue this vibrant tradition. We’re excited for what’s ahead—and we can’t wait to share it with you.
