Godspeed to our board member Sandy DeGroat

Sandra L. DeGroat, 77, of Honesdale, PA, died on Wednesday, August 28,

2024 Unexpected and peacefully at her home. Sandy was born on February 4th, 1947, in Honesdale, PA to the late Edward F. O’Keefe and Gwendolyn Burden O’Keefe.

Sandy was very active in her community. She graduated from Honesdale Catholic School and worked in numerous job settings throughout her life.

She played in the Women’s Softball league for a long time. Sandy and her mom Gwen joined a bowling league together. Sandy coached Wrestling Cheerleading for many years also.

Sandy volunteered in many places. Roots N Rhythm meant something to her.

She was involved in the local VFW and was a member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Sandy played a big role in the yearly Roots N Rhythm festival in making it happen. It was one of her favorite things to look forward to.

Sandy was one of nine children growing up.She is survived by her children, daughter, Lisa Maharaj of Honesdale, son, Scott Degroat & Jodi Verola, of Honesdale. She has a brother Michael & Maryetta O’Keefe of RI, brother Steven & Mi-Sun O’Keefe of MA, brother Patrick & Han O’Keefe,sister Sally Dixon of VA , sister Sheila in Lancaster, sister Susy & West in NC, sister Sheryl & Lyle of CO, Grandchildren Aneel, Aiden & Alexander Maharaj, and many nieces and nephews She is preceded in death by her mother and father along with her brother Robert O’Keefe, nephew Robert O’Keefe, and nephew Evan Kongvold.

Sandra was known by many and always would lend a hand if she was able.

She was also a force to reckon with at sporting events. She attended most WHSD games even after her kids grew up. She definitely has school spirit as a Hornet.

She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an avid Eagles fan and loved to watch football. Sandra loved to go to concerts with her daughter Lisa to see her favorite band Train. She did puzzles, and has been playing bingo since she played with her mom. Her favorite place to go was the Beach. She loved the sound of the ocean waves.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could go to the Breast Cancer Foundation or the VFW. Both places she had a special place in her heart.

Friends may join us to celebrate Sandra’s life. It will be at The Grace

Episcopol Church on September 12, 2024 from 4-7 PM. Arrangements by
