{"id":1348,"date":"2015-06-01T02:38:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T02:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.honesdalerootsandrhythm.com\/?p=1348"},"modified":"2015-06-01T02:38:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T02:38:00","slug":"music-mountains-coal-mines-tunes-tales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/honesdalerootsandrhythm.com\/?p=1348","title":{"rendered":"Music from the Mountains to the Coal Mines at Tunes &amp; Tales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dave Matsinko, a well-known folk musician from Pennsylvania, will perform at this year\u2019s Tunes &amp; Tales, a family-friendly feature event at the 10<sup>th<\/sup> annual Honesdale Roots &amp; Rhythm Music &amp; Arts Festival on Saturday, June 20<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Tunes &amp; Tales takes place from 12noon \u2013 5pm\u00a0 in the courtyard of the Central United Methodist Church, just around the corner from the main stage at 10<sup>th<\/sup> and Church Streets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDave is very versatile,\u201d says Lisa Macchia-Ohliger, who is coordinating the event and is\u00a0the Children\u2019s Program Coordinator for the Wayne County Historical Society Museum. \u201cHe sings and plays\u00a0guitar, old-time banjo, mandolin and a mountain dulcimer to bring the spirit of America\u2019s musical past into the present, offering music from the mountains to the coal mines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd for Tunes &amp; Tales, Dave will also be teaching young people how to play folk instruments,\u201d adds Macchia-Ohliger. \u201cIn another life, he was a teacher in the Lehighton School District. We are really excited to have him in this year\u2019s program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Dave Matsinko, who will be performing throughout the day, Tunes &amp; Tales will present Standingbear, a native American who will offer tales of his history and heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about \u2018living history,\u2019\u201d says Macchia-Ohliger. \u201cWe\u2019ll also have a Delaware &amp; Hudson canal boat that people can see and touch, a hands-on homestead from the 1800s and a working replica of the Stourbridge Lion steam locomotive\u2014the very same one that put Honesdale in the \u00a0history books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roots &amp; Rhythm\u00a0is a free non-profit music and arts event for all ages. The headliner this year is The Kentucky Headhunters, preceded by the blues\/gospel\u00a0singer Alexis P. Suter and her band, Professor Louie &amp; the Crowmatix (called a \u201ctasty mix of rhythm and blues and rock\u201d) and the soulful \u00a0singer\/songwriter Chrissi Poland. \u00a0The fun starts with local bands performing on Main Street in the morning and continues with the main stage\u00a0bands in Honesdale\u2019s Central Park around 1:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can truly make a day of this free event!\u201d exclaims Brian Fulp, Festival chair. \u201cCome to town mid-morning, have breakfast, then walk the streets of Honesdale shopping and listening to an array of awesome\u00a0music and then shift to the park after lunch.
